Who are you

I was once asked that question by a pastor I respect very much. He looked me right in the eye and asked me "Who are you?""What makes you Amber?" and for the first time in my life I sat there with a blank stare in my eyes and a jumble of thoughts in my head. I wasn't sure how to answer that question, what did he mean?!? I was more than confused but I managed to mumble out a few words.

The last few weeks I have been doing some serious soul searching. I have been looking within my heart to answer this question. "Who am I and what makes me Amber"...well allow me to answer that question for you....

I am Amber, I am a 23 year old medical professional with a fire for life and a determination to become something great....I am a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, grandchild, god mother, friend, mentor, lesbian, I am a leader.

There are many things that make up "me." Most of the things that make me who I am today come from lessons I did or didn't learn as a child. I have learned and continue to learn from my mistakes. I will be the first to admit I am no where near perfect, I make mistakes but not excuses. I have felt how short life really is. I have knocked on deaths door and by the grace of God I am still alive today. There is a plan for my life or I wouldn't be here today. Just as there is a plan for your life.

It's not always easy to find that purpose, I will be the first to admit I have spent many nights laying in bed asking myself if I really have a purpose in this world. What was I created for? Sometimes that question isn't always meant to be answered right away, that's what makes life such a Journey.

For many years I have searched inside myself and done the best that I can do be the best person I can be. I will admit I have failed at some things in life but never given up. I am a strong believer that the only real failure in life is the failure to try. I have always asked questions because it's how I learn. If I don't have an answer to something I will search as long as I have to, in order to obtain the answer. I enjoy teaching people new things and being a person others can look to for advice and comfort through some of our journeys most trying times. I am a person that enjoys people. I enjoy surrounding myself with people of all shapes, sizes, colors, cultures, backgrounds and walks of life. I am not quick to judge for I know I am no better than anyone else in this world.

I pride myself in my ability to learn things quickly, I may suck at math sometimes but hey we can't all be perfect at everything =)....I pride myself in being a leader and working to set an example for my generation. You must dare to be different to be a leader in this world.

To many times we get caught up in our own lives and forget to look around us at the people that may need us the most. Life is about moments we turn into memories. The quality of our lives is much more important then the quantity of time we spend in this world. Our time here is limited and temporary.

I have come to learn that my greatest fears in life (next to big bugs with stingers) are failure and missing out on the chance to change someones life for the better.

I encourage you to look inside yourself and learn about the things that truly make you who you are. What strengths do you bring? What are your weaknesses? What are you most afraid of? Write it down, share it with a close friend or family member. Make a promise to yourself just as I have to myself to become the best person that you can be and to not take life for granted. I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone to find the answers you desire most. It is not always easy but at the end of the day you will find yourself proud of what you have accomplished. So my question to you is....

"Who are you"

until next time....love and peace
