Image with me for a moment a you are a Samurai Warrior, before being allowed to fight you must endure years and years of intense training. You must learn discipline and patience before your teachers will let you step into a fight with the most sacred of weapons, a sword. Your sword is your protection it is your tool and how you use it will determine the outcome of your battle. In a split second your use of that weapon could change the lives of both you and your opponent forever.
Now not all of us are Samurai Warriors (or at least I'm not, that is for sure!), however we possess a weapon, just as sacred, just as dangerous as a Samurai warrior's sword and that is our words. Our words have the power to change our lives and the lives of people around us. When we are young children our parents begin to teach us when and how to use our words, but as we get older that becomes our responsibility. As adults we are expected to have discipline and patience in the use of our words, much like a samurai warrior is expected to have with the use of his sword.
Don Miguel Ruiz once said
“Be Impeccable With Your Word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”
When I sit back and think about the power of my words, I realize that I have the ability to change the lives of many people. I realize that with one word the lives of many can be changed for good or destroyed forever. If I begin to look at my words as a gift from God, I remember that I was put here for a purpose and when I stand before him someday I want to be able to say I used my words in a way that was pleasing to him. I am learning more and more how to do that, because I will be the first to admit I have not always done it in the past.
In my journey to speaking with integrity and honor I have been lead to a few verses from the bible that speak of the power of our tongue and our words
Proverbs 12:18~ "Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing"
Proverbs 18:21~ "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Hebrew 4:12-13~"For The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight."
I am learning to view my tongue and my words as sacred weapons. These weapons were entrusted to me for great things. Is it up to me to use them with dignity, pride and honor. God gave me these weapons for a reason and I need to remember to use them to honor him. God chose to give me these weapons for a purpose and he could choose to take them away just as quickly.
So my challenge for you is to begin to view your words as a sacred weapon, use them for truth and love. Look to God to give you the words that he wants you to speak and then have the courage to speak those words with compassion and understanding. Together we have the ability to change the lives of many.
Until next time....Love and Peace
